When I first started working on deep space CubeSat missions, I realized that choosing the right space communication protocol was crucial. Last quarter, our team discovered that the default protocol wasn't performing as expected, and we had to benchmark different options to find the best one. In this article, I'll share our experience with IRIS and CCSDS, two popular protocols used in space communication.
The Problem with Default Protocols
Most docs skip the hard part of implementing space communication protocols. When you're working with CubeSats, the communication link is the most critical component. We tried using the default protocol, but it failed miserably. The signal-to-noise ratio was too low, and we were losing packets left and right. That's when we decided to explore other options.
