When I first started working with Magic Leap 2, I was excited about the potential for mixed reality (MR) in healthcare. Our team had been exploring ways to enhance patient engagement and education, and MR seemed like the perfect fit. However, as we delved deeper into development, we encountered several challenges that made us question our approach.
The Problem with Traditional MR Development
Most MR development focuses on gaming or entertainment, which doesn't directly translate to healthcare. We needed to create an immersive experience that was both engaging and informative, while also ensuring patient safety and data security. I realized that X only works if you also do Y, which is to carefully consider the unique requirements of healthcare applications.
Choosing the Right Tools
We chose Unity 2023 as our development platform due to its extensive support for MR and its large community of developers. However, we soon discovered that the official documentation skipped the hard part - implementing Azure Spatial Anchors for persistent, multi-user experiences.
